Rose of the Mire on Etsy

This post was written by Lindy Shopper.

I’ve been on the hunt for a flapper headpiece this week and was overwhelmed by the sheer number of artisans creating such things on Etsy. Some are better than others and Rose of the Mire stuck out as one of those with particular attention to detail. There was a lovely air of romanticism in these pieces that drew me in to the “shop.”

I’ve been pining over this Beaded Flapper Headband, even though I don’t have anything to wear with it. It’s just the right amount of Art Deco, looks comfortable, not too much feather….just right.

Here are some other lovelies from the store:

1930’s Men’s Suits on eBay

This post was written by Lindy Shopper.

Usually the vintage suits come one or two at a time on eBay, but here’s a few more than the usual, including three white linen suits!

1930's Belted Back White Linen Suit
1930's/1940's Herringbone Stripe Suit
1930's White Linen Suit

Hazelwood Dress

You know you’ve looked at the Remix Vintage Shoes website too many times when you spot a cute ensemble and know exactly which pair of Remix shoes you’d pair with it. This time, I’ve spotted a dress that would look good with two styles – this brown and tan/gray “Hazelwood” dress from ModCloth may be vintage-inspired, but the clean lines on the dress also look very modern to me. This could also be the jump start for your Fall dance and/or work wardrobe, no?

However, without great accessories, this dress falls short of stellar. Two pairs of Remix Vintage Shoes came to mind: depending on how well the color blends, both the “Beverly” and the “Zurich” look like they would pair well with the Hazelwood dress. Now that I have this pairing together, I’m thinking maybe one of the brown on brown combos would look good as well…so many shoes, so little disposable income. 😉

Red Gingham 1940’s Dress

This post was written by Lindy Shopper.

Another adorable gingham dress, for your viewing pleasure, this time in red gingham. This 1940’s rayon crepe dress has layered sleeves and a peplum with fabric on the bias. Peplum and gingham on the same dress! Fortunately, that horrible black flower pin is not included with the dress…as we learned from Project Runway this week, styling is half the battle.

Old Dress, New Dress

This post was written by Lindy Shopper.

I couldn’t come up with a catchy name for this post, but I liken it to those sections in fashion magazines that are “Real v. Steal,” only the comparison here is old v. new. How does an older dress translate to a newer dress? Here, primarily through the use of fabric and trimmings. The old version is a belted 1940’s dress being sold on eBay, with black piping, buttons, and belt. The new version is from Trashy Diva who created this “early 1940’s inspired dress” from a similar fabric to the old one, with black button and belt buckle detailing, giving it a similar feel to the vintage dress. Overall, the effect of both dresses is very cool and I’d love to see more of this color scheme on the dance floor.

Dance Undergarments

This post was written by Lindy Shopper.

After a wardrobe malfunction in the middle of finals at Twin Cities Balboa Festival, the undergarments Lindy Shopper wears dancing have taken on new importance; thus, a post was necessary. These are some of the least talked about clothing items, probably because we don’t normally see the undergarments and generally people compliment or comment on what they see. I like to pick out undergarments with a specific function in mind, but I find myself constantly seeking better function for dancing. I would love to hear what works and what doesn’t work for you and invite commentary on this blog, as I am still seeking the perfect bra and pair of underwear for dancing. Gents, feel free to chime in on your choices as well…I can only imagine.

A swing dancer’s underwear should stay put, provide full coverage for your bum, and generally not inhibit dancing. I see a lot of women with biker shorts under their skirts, which provide maximum coverage of bum and upper leg. I do not subscribe to the wearing of biker shorts, so I can’t comment on what products may work best for this, but I would caution against getting something that may be too tight or too supportive, for fear that the shorts will cause a ripple effect (which I have witnessed on the dance floor).

Another full coverage option is to wear a slip, which I discussed at length in an earlier blog post.

I sometimes wear cheerleading bloomers, which are made for jumping around, tumbling, and dancing, so the function translated well from sport to dance. I’m a big fan of Varsity’s products and their bloomers are comfortable, immovable, and indestructible (I’ve had mine since the 7th grade). They also come in a lot of fun colors, but be careful if you order white, because the only underwear color that won’t show through is tan/nude.

My newest favorite option, as of late, is a thicker cotton, wedgie-resistant version of the granny panty – full coverage underwear almost up to your navel. I got this idea after looking at the shape of bloomers, which are essentially the same as granny panties, only with bloomers you have two layers – your regular, less coverage undies and the bloomers. I thought, why not eliminate the middle man? Unless I’m doing aerials, I don’t necessarily need the iron-clad security of bloomers. Granny panties provide the same amount of coverage as bloomers without having an extra layer of polyester fabric; thus, they are more breathable and comfortable.

The search was on and I stumbled upon Hanes’ Low Rise Modern Brief with Comfort Waistband , with a “No Ride Up” money back comfort guarantee, in my local Target. While labeled as low rise, they looked pretty high rise to me. When I got them home and held them up they looked intimidatingly large. I had to laugh at myself when I first put them on to wear to a dance because they were so different from the norm. They were big, but they were also very comfy. I didn’t even notice them during the dance and I think that’s the point – it’s good to wear something you don’t have to worry about under your dress.

I am at a loss for what to recommend for a bra. Dancers need the support of a really durable sports bra, but often wear clothes that don’t work with the kind of full coverage that a sports bra provides. I am left looking for a bra that can still be worn with a V-neck dress that can keep the girls locked and loaded.

My malfunction at TCBF incited discussion about other malfunctions and both Sylvia Sykes and Nick Williams agreed that, for the guys, it’s always a good idea to match your underwear to your pants color. Your pants may still fit and not be too tight, but still rip at the seams if a particular dance move puts too much strain on the pants. If your underwear matches your pants, people may not even notice the rip, even if it’s a rather large rip.

The J. Peterman Company

This post was written by Lindy Shopper.

By way of Lindy Dandy, today’s featured retailer is the J. Peterman Company. Although I can’t help thinking of Seinfeld when I see this name, the J. Peterman Company is anything but a parody, offering “high-quality men’s, women’s, home and one-of-a-kind merchandise,” “traveling the world to find uncommonly good stuff.” Sounds like a fantastic job, right? Where does Lindy Shopper sign up?

There are definitely a lot of items with a nod to vintage in the catalog, made to look even more so with the help of the catalog’s hand-drawn illustrations of the clothing (which, themselves, look like a nod to vintage pattern drawings in the way that they are shaded). I’m trying to decide if the hand-drawn illustrations of the clothes are helpful or not. Generally, clothes are modeled by someone who is tall and rail thin, so it’s hard to tell how it will fit in that instance as well. In any case, the clothes are beautifully sketched and it is a novel way to present them.

I am particularly in love with the 1947 plaid dress and the seersucker sailor pants for women and their men’s pants and striped shirts.

Pure Water 2Go: Personal Water Filters in a Bottle

This post was written by Lindy Shopper.

One of the things I always worry about when I travel for swing dancing is hydration. Carrying a case of bottled water on an airplane is out of the question and buying bottled water every time you need it is not always convenient to your location or eco-friendly. Carrying my Pur water pitcher with me seems silly and would take up way too much space in my luggage. I could drink the tap water, but I really don’t want to. Wouldn’t it be great if someone made a water filter that fit in your water bottle? Then you’d only have to carry one small bottle with your luggage and simply find a tap at your destination.

I love when I can think of a simple solution to a problem and someone else has already created this solution. Pure Water 2Go offers three different sizes of their filtered water bottles and, of course replacement filters. My only disappointment is that you are not able to purchase the water bottles directly from the company. They provide a list of retailers in each state (none of which are near me!). Some of the bottles and filters are available for purchase online from various web retailers, such as Healing Water Filters. The scarcity of retail locations may have something to do with the company’s struggle to defend its patent.

I’m liking the company’s “Eco” model, which comes in a lot of different colors, and will probably pick up one of these very soon in green. 🙂

Joseph Abboud Dress Oxfords

This post was written by Lindy Shopper.

As mentioned in my last post, I went to an outdoor wedding in June, with the oppressive North Carolina humidity and heat in full effect. A gentleman at the wedding, serving as both emcee for the wedding, friend of the family, and fashion inspiration for all of the aspiring Southern gentlemen present, was wearing a tan seersucker suit, a glorious coral dress shirt, a candy colored necktie, a coral pocket square, and a most amazing pair of tan linen and brown leather shoes that perfectly complimented the ensemble. It was great to see a variation on the traditional white bucks. The gentleman said the shoes were Joseph Abboud for Florsheim (if I remember correctly), purchased a few years ago. I almost asked if I could photograph his outfit, but decided that would be too creepy, under the circumstances.

I searched for these shoes online, wanting to find these stylish shoes that looked like they would be great for dancing, but came up empty handed. I’ve had searches running for these shoes on eBay and nothing close to these shoes has come up. I will continue my mission for these shoes, but in the interim…

…eBay searches have yielded another Joseph Abboud linen and leather combo, pictured here. They are more casual than the other pair I’m looking for, but perhaps more functional for dancers who aren’t the seersucker suit wearing types?

They just aren’t as great as the ones worn by the Southern gent. *sigh* I will keep looking.
